Program Statements

Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary endeavor that increasingly requires fluency both in science and business for the development of new technologies and products based on unique applications of cellular and molecular life sciences. The Professional Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and   Master of Science  (M.Sc.)  Degrees in Biotechnology and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Rijeka offer education required to comprehend and commercialize the relevant emerging technologies and/or their products.

History of the Department

In
July 2008 the Senate of the University of Rijeka has accepted a feasibility study on the establishment of the Department of Biotechnology, University of Rijeka, which was developed by a group of prominent Croatian scholars and university teachers from Zagreb and Rijeka. The entire work on the establishment of the Department in the past few years was coordinated by the Rector, Daniel Rukavina. Establishment of the Department is in accordance with the adopted strategy of the University of Rijeka, which stresses the need to build the research profile of the University and the importance of biotechnology, nanotechnology and information technology. Undergraduate and graduate programs are designed in collaboration with the Institute "Ruđer Bošković" and Galapagos research center in Zagreb. In the implementation of the program the support and participation of Rijeka's company "Jadran Galenski Laboratorij" is significant; the company will provide the technological base and allow the use of its laboratories for performing a part of practical training for students. After the acceptance of the feasibility study on the establishing of the Deparment by the Senate in July 2008, at the meeting held on September 29, 2008, the Senate confirmed the establishment of the Department of Biotechnology, University of Rijeka, and Prof. dr. sc. Krešimir Pavelić
as was unanimously elected as acting head. A year after that, Prof. dr. Krešimir Pavelić became the head of the Department of Biotechnology, which was confirmed by the Senate of the University of Rijeka at the meeting held on July 14, 2009.
